Position Overview & Specifications

We have an excellent Paediatric assessment unit (PAU) co-located with the Children’s Emergency Department.

We are a friendly dedicated team of Paediatric Nurses and Paediatric consultants. The department is committed to continuous improvements in the service and benefits from having a Paediatric Emergency Nurse Practitioner and Advance Nurse Practitioner service.

We are currently looking to recruit a motivated, enthusiastic, experienced paediatric nurse with experience in the emergency department or acute environment and a passion to provided high quality evidence based care.

Our PAU provides an opportunity to care for acutely unwell or injured children that may need a period of assessment following admission through ED prior to discharge, caring for GP referrals, and referrals to the paediatric team.

You will monitor, treat and then either admit the child to the ward or discharge home. In addition you will gain experience in nursing acutely ill children in emergency situations.

The successful candidate will be involved in helping to create nurse led pathways, as well as ensuring the best most effective process for a smooth running PAU area by working closely alongside the team within the Children’s Emergency Department.

The candidate may be asked to cross cover in the Children’s Emergency Department or other Paediatric area in busy times or if staff are required to be redeployed. This will provide experience that will help with development.

We also have a robust team of Paediatric Emergency Nurse Practitioners and are developing a Paediatric Advanced Nurse Practitioners service. We take pride in the fact that they all have been developed internally by sending on appropriate modules.

There has never been a more exciting time to join West Hertfordshire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust! Major redevelopment works are due for completion by 2025 or soon after. These will be most dramatic at Watford General Hospital where up to 90% of buildings will be new.

The trust has recently gained ‘teaching hospital’ status which reflects the dedicated work of many teams and individuals who have set the standard for delivering high quality training, learning and education at all levels of the workforce.
