About us
VolkerRail is an established and experienced railway infrastructure contractor. We have a successful track record of delivering projects across the whole of the UK; working with Network Rail, London Underground as well as light rail and tram operating companies to enhance the national infrastructure.
VolkerRail Plant division, based in Scunthorpe, but working all over the UK, provides the network with heavy plant based machinery to maintain and upgrade the railway network.
From rail mounted Kirow cranes, Road Rail Vehicles & Beaver Tampers, the range of specialist plant available and the services we provide is extensive. This is all backed up by our in-house training, planning and professional engineering teams.
The Role
An opportunity has arisen for a Trainee Maintainer Operator to join VolkerRail Plant working within the POM department. “POMs” are “Possession Only Machines” which operate at times when the railway network is closed to traffic to allow upgrades and enhancements, predominantly on weekends and midweek nights.
The key duties will include:
- Responsible for carrying out daily, weekly, monthly and annual servicing, maintenance, repairs, major overhauls etc., of Possession Only Machines (POM’s) to the relevant laid down VolkerRail standards.
- Responsible for on site repairs and pre delivery inspections of the machines to the relevant laid down VolkerRail standards.
- Responsible for carrying out the operation of Possession Only Machines (POM’s) to the relevant laid down technical and safety standards.
- Responsible for ground support operational working for the machines.
Skills & Experience
You will be self-motivated with a pro-active approach and be able to work under pressure and meet deadlines. Problem solving, communication and good interpersonal skills are a key requirement for this role. The candidate will also ideally have the following experience/skill set, however this isn’t necessarily an essential requirement:
- Be either a trained apprentice in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering or possess an NVQ level 3 (mechanical or electrical) or equivalent.
- Experience of fault finding and a servicing background as a Fitter &/or Electrician.
- Confident communication skills
- A responsible attitude and high level of safety awareness.
- Flexibility is also essential for this role as there will be travel, lodging and working nights and weekends.
The entry level salary for these positions is £38,865 per annum. You will be required to follow type specific engineering and operational training which is linked to further salary increments. In addition to the base salary there is potential for overtime working.
