Position Overview & Specifications

The lab of Prof Matt Higgins is seeking a Research Assistant to join a research project funded by the United States international development agency, USAID, in which we aim to produce and test malaria vaccine immunogens designed through rational structure-guided approaches. The post-holder will join an active research consortium and will work closely with other team members, taking responsibility for the pre-clinical testing of designed immunogens. They will produce protein, purify antibodies, conduct ELISA assays and assess growth inhibitory activity of antibodies in Plasmodium falciparum culture. They will also oversee our derogated category 3 culture room, maintaining stocks and overseeing safety training for room users. This provides an exciting opportunity to engage in malaria vaccine, while developing skills in both research and facility management.
You should hold a Bachelors degree in a relevant subject area and have relevant research experience. You should possess sufficient specialist knowledge in order to work within the established research programmes and have the ability to manage your own research and administrative activities. Excellent communication skills, including the ability to write text that can be published and present data at conferences is essential together with experience following and adapting protocols and selecting appropriate experimental methodologies. Experience with ELISA and cell culture would be advantageous but is not essential.
This full-time, fixed-term post is funded by USAID for up two years in the first instance and is based in the Department of Biochemistry, South Parks Road, Oxford.
This position is graded on the University’s Grade 6 scale, for which the salary range is £30,502 - £36,386 per annum. The actual starting salary offered will be based on qualifications and relevant skills acquired and will also be determined by the funding available.
