Position Overview & Specifications

Machine learning (ML), or “AI” as it is referred to by the media, has been the driving force behind the most exciting recent technological advances, having its impact on fields as diverse as medical imaging, conversational agents, astronomy, and many more. The Oxford Applied and Theoretical Machine Learning (OATML) group is an energetic world-leading research group working at the core of machine learning research and its applications, located at the Computer Science department, and led by Yarin Gal, Associate Professor of Machine Learning.
We are a multidisciplinary team of researchers (post-doc scientists and DPhil students), coming from diverse backgrounds including Computer Science, Maths & Stats, Engineering, Physics, and medical professionals, with most students coming from industry. OATML has 25+ researchers and at any given time, focused on 30+ concurrent projects across domains such as medical, climate, conversational agents, autonomous driving, astronomy, computational biology, physics, as well as fundamental ML, and collaborating with world class ML labs e.g. Google, DeepMind, Apple, GSK, Toyota, JPMorgan, and Intel, as well as with Harvard Medical School, Berkeley AI lab, Montreal’s MILA, among others. The group has contributed substantially to the field of machine learning, developing AI tools that can inform their users when the tools are “guessing at random” and not to be trusted. These tools have been deployed widely in industry and academia, across medical applications, robotics, computer vision, astronomy, climate, in the sciences, and by NASA.
We are looking for an ambitious and entrepreneurial Project Manager to oversee the day-to-day running of the research group. The Project Manager will be responsible for the operations of the research group, will act as a force multiplier on the group’s impact, and will promote and build its global reputation. This post is an exciting opportunity for someone who is keen to support and collaboratively work with a fast paced and world-leading research group, and who would be motivated to help find solutions so the group runs efficiently and effectively. You will be responsible for translating the vision of the group into an operational plan and executing the same. You will coordinate with multiple stakeholders across industry and academia to organise and manage the group's project portfolio which is composed of many projects (> £3m).
The ideal candidate will expertly coordinate between various departments and teams, write grants proposals, develop project and donor reports, assist in research dissemination by refining the group’s communication, outreach, and collaboration strategies. The candidate will coordinate with the media, developing materials (e.g. for website, newsletter, talks, presentations) and help coordinate the group’s outreach efforts. The project manager will lead and drive the group’s HR, finance, and health and safety related processes, and coordinate with the relevant stakeholders as required. The role will offer great opportunities for career development, as a step to transition into a leadership position within the group. The successful candidate will be expected to work onsite in Oxford in line with current safe University of Oxford working practices. They will ensure that the relevant administrative duties are carried out, and that appropriate management and support is available at each of the partners, to support the delivery of the project, designating funds where needed to achieve this aim.
Applicants will be required to upload a supporting statement, setting out how you meet the selection criteria.
The closing date for applications is 12 noon on 21st April 2023**. Interviews are expected to be held in early May.**
We are a Stonewall Top 100 Employer, Living Wage, holding an Athena Swan Bronze Award, HR excellence in Research and Race Equality Charter Bronze Award.
Our staff and students come from all over the world and we proudly promote a friendly and inclusive culture. Diversity is positively encouraged, through diversity groups and champions, as well as a number of family-friendly policies, such as the right to apply for flexible working and support for staff returning from periods of extended absence, for example shared parental leave.
Demonstrating a commitment to provide equality of opportunity. We would particularly welcome applications from women and black and minority ethnic applicants who are currently under-represented within the Computer Science Department. All applicants will be judged on merit, according to the selection criteria.
