Position Overview & Specifications

The University of Kent is seeking to appoint a Lecturer in Graphic Design (Education, Scholarship and Professional Practice) to teach on our new degree programme of Graphic Design.

In 2021, the School of Architecture & Planning at the University of Kent launched a new undergraduate programme in Graphic Design with the aim of becoming a large and thriving centre of design excellence, teaching the related disciplines of graphics, spatial and interiors, architecture and planning, and researching in the areas of history and theory, sustainability, sensory communication, narrative environments and digital design. The University is supportive of these expansion plans, having recently approved funding to expand and refurbish our existing studio spaces. This is an exciting time for you to join the School.

If successful you will work closely with the Programme Director of Graphic Design and provide support, acting as a sounding board for curriculum design, and sharing studio, workshop and lecture and seminar teaching. Although the Head of School is the line manager for all academic staff within the School, you will report to the Programme Director on a day-to-day basis.

If appointed, you will:

  • deliver and contribute to the design of high-quality, demand-driven, and student-centred taught programmes
  • convene and teach appropriate modules
  • engage in individual and collaborative research and scholarship activities and to support the wider research culture of the School and Division
  • contribute fully to the Division and University by participating in meetings, working groups, committees, and other Division and University activities

To succeed in this role you will have:

  • a first degree in Graphic Design, Visual Communication or other relevant field, or equivalent experience
  • a Masters / PhD in Graphic Design, Visual Communication or a cognate area or equivalent professional experience is desirable
  • knowledge of print and digital graphic design, visual communication, typography, animation and associated production methods
  • experience of Graphic Design/Visual Communication teaching
  • an ability to devise and deploy a variety of strategies to promote and assess learning to enthuse and inspire students
  • willingness to contributing fully and flexibly as part of the School of Architecture, Planning and Design team

By becoming a member of the Kent School of Architecture and Planning in the Division of Arts and Humanities, you will be joining a School with a vibrant research environment with research groups in the areas of digital design, sustainable environments, and design history and theory. You will contribute to the active scholarship and innovation group within the School working with colleagues in the School and Division across a range of subject disciplines to enhance pedagogical practice and scholarship within our degree programmes.

Kent School of Architecture and Planning is in a buoyant mood, with steady student numbers in its long-established BA and MArch programmes (RIBA Parts 1 and 2), and a developing portfolio of specialist Masters programmes. It is developing its own design Foundation programme, as well as Higher Degree Apprenticeships in architecture and planning. It is very active in the region, the University having just established the Institute of Creative and Cultural Industries, and we are fully engaged in the Creative Estuary project, working with Essex and Kent County Councils.

Interviews are expected w/c 26th June.
