Position Overview & Specifications

Job Purpose
To support and maintain audio-visual and IT learning technologies as part of the Audio Visual Services (AV Services) team, ensuring the student learning experience is uninterrupted and uncompromised. Contribute to the research, development, and implementation of new and more advanced audio-visual learning technologies so that the university’s teaching environments remain effective, relevant and efficient, as new technologies and teaching methods emerge and develop.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
1. Coordinate and assist AV technicians in the installation and replacement of AV equipment and systems in centrally managed learning spaces. Ensuring a standardised approach to equipment installation and reducing the risk of impact to student experience.
2. Coordinate with external suppliers and contractors, and specialist teams within information services such as the network infrastructure team to plan and facilitate the integration of AV equipment, such as networked AV, control systems, projection, switching, infrastructure etc, in new and existing systems. Ensuring installations meet the university’s standards and will provide excellent AV provision in learning spaces.
3. Support and maintain audio-visual equipment in centrally allocated learning spaces. Proactively maintain learning spaces through remote monitoring system administration and cyclical maintenance regimes; reactively support learning spaces through emergency end-user support and fault resolution to minimise the potential impact to student learning experience.
4. Support, advise and train end-users in the operation of various AV technologies provided in learning spaces. Improving the student learning experience by ensuring end-users are familiar with and competent in the operation of AV technologies.
5. To maintain up-to-date knowledge and understanding of current and emerging technologies, best practises, and protocols, relevant to learning space technology and IT infrastructure. Through collaboration with internal and external contacts, ensure learning space technologies remains relevant and future-proof, the student and academic learning and teaching experience.
6. Provide specialist input into development of learning space AV/IT design and practices. Ensuring that our technology provision meets with end-user requirements and contributes to the university's strategic aims.
7. As a member of the Audio Visual Services (AV Services) team, provide audio visual support, including mixing audio for live teaching and University events.
8. Other tasks and duties as may be assigned to meet the objectives of the wider team, Information Services, or the University as a whole.
Knowledge, qualifications, skills and experience
Knowledge/qualifications
Essential:
A1 Ability to demonstrate the competencies required to undertake the duties associated with this level of post having acquired the necessary knowledge and skills in a similar role or Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 8 (Scottish Vocational Qualification level 4, Higher National Diploma) or equivalent, e.g., CTS standard in AV or IT and experience of personal development in a similar role supporting relevant systems.
A2 Technical AV and IT networking knowledge relevant to the duties required in this job.
A3 Working knowledge of MS Windows and AV configuration software.
A4 Experience in service delivery gained from a customer focused environment.
A5 Knowledge of network protocols and principals.
Desirable:
B1 Basic knowledge of audio mixing best practice and principles.
Skills
Essential:
C1 Ability to demonstrate personal initiative, self-motivation, judgement, and well-developed technical and problem-solving capabilities, working logically through complex problems, from information gathering to satisfactory resolution, including the skill of knowing when to involve others with specialist skills or more experience.
C2 Ability to deal with a broad spectrum of users teaching space equipment who possess a variable range of technical knowledge in a clear and supportive manner.
C3 Well organised to meet scheduled activities and deadlines related to the job.
C4 Able to demonstrate the effective transfer of skills and knowledge to colleagues, other staff, and students in the use of technical equipment and platforms.
C5 Possess excellent written, oral, communication and numeric skills.
C6 Ability to work without direct supervision under pressure.
C7 Ability to work and contribute as part of an AVIT technical support team.
Experience
Essential:
E1 Considerable experience of AV instals.
E2 Relevant experience in a similar or related support role.
E3 Substantial operational and technical knowledge of relevant systems including the installation, maintenance, and support of AV equipment.
E4 An understanding of the operation and topology of networked AV systems within teaching space environments.
E5 Experience in liaising with external stakeholders including AV contractors.
Desirable:
F1 Familiarity with scheduling timetabled events using proprietary scheduling packages.
F2 Sound technical background, including knowledge of currents standards and developments in audio-visual technologies.
F3 Sound technical IT experience including applied knowledge of IP networking.
F4 Understanding of pedagogical benefits of lecture recording.
F5 Experience of a customer focused service delivery environment.
Terms and Conditions
Salary will be Grade 6, £30,502 - £34,308 per annum.
