Position Overview & Specifications
The department is supportive of post graduate training and education and keen to facilitate staff development.
- Assess a referral or request form, and justify it under departmental and locally agreed protocols.
- Ensure that the protocol used for an examination is suitably matched to the clinical indications for the procedure.
- Liaise with referring clinicians to clarify or discuss requests for ultrasound procedures.
- Act as a point of highly specialist advice for referrers, other clinical staff, patients and their relatives in the modality / service.
- Ensure that patients, relatives and staff are appropriately informed and reassured of any discussions relating to patient procedures.
- Assess the physical, mental and communication abilities and needs of individual patients and respond appropriately.
- Answer all questions and concerns of the patients, providing them with appropriate responses, putting the patient’s condition into the context of the procedure.
- Document that patients have consented to procedures and to issue and ensure they understand any instructions they need to follow.
- Enter accurate patient examination data into Imaging Information Systems e.g. EPIC and PACS.
- Accurately position patients for the appropriate examinations, taking into account their abilities, needs and limitations.
- Appropriately adapt standard techniques to ensure that ultrasound procedures are undertaken appropriately for patients with limited capabilities.
- Participate in patient monitoring or administration of oxygen.

We have an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic Sonographer to join our forward-thinking and friendly department right in the heart of London’s West End.
The ultrasound department is based across five sites; UCH, GWB, UCLH at Westmoreland Street and The Royal National ENT and Eastman Dental Hospitals.
The sonographer ultrasound service includes general, urological and small parts for inpatients, outpatients, A&E and GP’s.
Gynaecological and obstetric ultrasound is not performed by Imaging, but delivered by Women’s Health.
A local short term Recruitment and Retention Premium (RRP) of £5,000 pa (pro rata) will be paid from April 2020 to new and existing sonographers in recognition of their vital part in the radiology service and will be reviewed annually
