What you’ll learn & achieve::
The Test Technician will report to a Laboratory Leader within our Built Environment Team in Telford, typically working outside in all weathers and performing manually challenging work. The team performs testing of curtain cladding and rainscreen samples for air permeability, water tightness, wind serviceability and safety as well as impacting.

Under minimal supervision, you will conduct investigations by assembling test set-ups/rigs for curtain cladding and rainscreen, record test data, conduct tests, and assemble and disassemble products, materials, and equipment.

Working in accordance with internal processes, testing standards, H&S, ISO 17025 and UL procedures as, the Test Technician will examine basic customer samples and conducts basic laboratory tests.

You will follow defined test plans and data sheets, communicate with customers during set-up and operation to ensure proper evaluation. You will also successfully partner with Laboratory and Engineering teams to projects are completed in a timely manner with high quality.

Job Responsibilities:
  • Builds and/or adapts basic setup and test equipment for performance of tests
  • Performs tests using general laboratory equipment
  • Performs routine care of designated test equipment and work area
  • As directed follows defined test plans and datasheets
  • Evaluates test performance and sample operation to properly evaluate test results
  • Reads and interprets results of tests. Prepares charts, graphs and reports to explain test results
  • Examines test samples, reads measuring instruments and reviews test data with supervisor
  • As instructed examines customer samples and learns to operate basic tests for each case
  • Communicates with customers during setup and operation to ensure proper evaluation
  • Operates designated machines, special laboratory equipment and tools as directed
  • Performs routine maintenance of designated test equipment and work area
  • Read and follow the Underwriters Laboratories Code of Conduct, and follow all physical and digital security practices
  • Perform risk assessments

We are seeking an individual who wishes to pursue a career within a truly international organisation, following a career path within a laboratory testing setting. Experience within our industry is not required, as full training will be given. However, we are seeking someone who is motivated, willing to learn and can adapt to a changing environment.

The ideal candidate would be someone who has worked in a similar environment, such as a construction site/yard, warehouse facility or factory, however this is not essential. Ideally, you will also have knowledge of technical drawings, but full training will be provided.

We require an individual who is happy working outside and at heights, often in challenging UK weather conditions.

You should be willing and able to quickly learn the standards that UL Solutions works to, whilst also learning new technical concepts and processes. You will also have the following:

Essential skills:

  • Higher Secondary education
  • Attention to detail
  • Ability to work in a team, but also work independently
  • Can use Microsoft Office
Desirable skills:

  • Can interpret technical information/drawings
  • Exposure to a similar environment, such as construction/builders’ yard or site, factory or warehouse
  • Testing experience
