Position Overview & Specifications

Overall, Purpose of the Job

We are seeking an enthusiastic and proactive chemical engineering technician to join our dynamic Faculty Technical Operations team, which strives to provide a sector leading technical support for our students and staff. The purpose of this role is:

  • Support the provision of teaching and research in the James Chadwick laboratories and Pilot Hall areas.
  • Set up and run large and small scale equipment and carry out maintenance checks.
  • To support staff and students working on UG, Meng ad MSc teaching projects.

MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Equipment & Operations

  • Assist in the maintenance and servicing of large scale equipment for teaching and research
  • Provide technical support for staff and student demonstrators within the teaching laboratories
  • To demonstrate the use of teaching equipment to staff, students and teaching assistants.
  • Liaise with senior members of technical staff to plan a schedule of day to day work, as required.
  • Contribute to the development and review of operating procedures and processes using your own technical knowledge and experience.
  • Contribute to the definition and execution of your own day-to-day responsibilities using your own knowledge, experience and initiative and act with a level of autonomy to plan and prioritise your own daily/weekly workload.
  • Train students, staff and visitors to safely carry out core functions e.g. equipment set up and operation, basic maintenance and repair, processes and procedures, operation of software, etc.
  • Induct and train staff, students and visitors to enable them to work in controlled and/or hazardous environments.
  • Identify and solve simple to more complex problems using your knowledge and experience e.g. equipment fault diagnosis, troubleshooting and maintenance.
  • Arrange engineering and contractor visits to resolve any issues related to essential equipment in order to minimise any disruption to research and service provision, while ensure your team and relevant stakeholders are kept fully up to date on matters arising.
  • Plan resource requirements in advance, including maintaining appropriate equipment and consumable levels, procurement of goods, liaising with colleagues, etc.
  • Be responsive, agile and flexible based on service need across FSE i.e. learn new techniques, support other areas in the Faculty should the need arise, on occasions perform additional duties outside the scope of your role but commensurate with grade.
  • Be an active and enthusiastic member of the FSE Technical Operations community.
