Head of Music

Due to the relocation of the current Head of Music, the Academy is seeking someone who is passionate about the role music plays in enriching young people’s lives.

The Music curriculum is broken up into three units, performance, composition and appraising. As their performance skills develop such as knowledge of chords and rhythms, students can apply this skill to their appraising. We aim to build creative, determined and adaptable musicians who can take these skills into the modern musical world.

During MYP years (7-9) students explore performance through world music, composition through film music and appraising through music history. The Music curriculum encourages independent thinking, developing creative ideas and responding to music listening. Global learning is embedded through the exploration of world-wide instruments, music artists and genres.

During Years 10-11, students may choose to study Music at GCSE level where they will be working towards fulfilling the three examined components of the WJEC Eduqas GCSE in Music.

Year 12 and 13 study the BTEC Level 3 National Extended Certificate in Music Performance.

Music is one of four subjects, overseen by an Assistant Principal, within Obama House.

The Academy offers great facilities, including a radio station, a MAC suite, and several peripatetic rooms are available for both solo and group Music lessons on a wide range of instruments. We work with ‘Music Station’, a local group of skilled and friendly music tutors who come into the Academy during tutor and lunch times. Lessons are scheduled once a week and last for 30 minutes.

Job Purpose

• To support Obama House in the delivery of the curriculum in support of raising standards and promoting the vision, ethos, culture and policies of the Academy in line with Academy Improvement Plan and the Subject Improvement Plan.
• To support Obama House to secure high quality learning, raise standards and have a positive impact on student experience within the subject area.
• To implement and deliver an appropriately broad, balanced, relevant and differentiated curriculum for students and to support a designated curriculum area as appropriate.
• To work to the professional duties set out in the School Teachers’ Pay and Conditions Document and meet all requirements as appropriate of the Teachers’ Standards.

Salary: MPS/UPS (TLR 2.1 for the right candidate)
