Position Overview & Specifications

Looking for something different and exciting, look no further as we have an amazing opportunity to come and join our Ophthalmic Medical Photography Team. The brand new role of Ophthalmic Technician offers the right person a unique starting point to a new career path.

You will be involved in undertaking pressure measurements, visual fields / visual acuity testing, pentacam imaging and other clinical techniques essential to the diagnosis and treatment of a variety of ophthalmic disorders. Keen to learn new skills and take on new challenges then this post is for you, full training will be given.

The ophthalmic instruments used to examine patients are technical and require high levels of concentration for extended periods.

The technician must develop a good understanding of ophthalmic conditions whilst gaining the knowledge and experience necessary to undertake ophthalmic examinations safely and to a competent level.

Carry out the following visual assessments

Visual Fields Testing

Visual acuity measurement of patients

Specular microscopy of patients

Pentacam of patients

Intra-Ocular Pressure measurements of patients

Auto Lensmeter measurements

Pachymetry measurement of patients.

  • To provide visual assessments including but not limited to visual fields, visual acuity, pentacam and intra-ocular pressure (IOP) measurement which provide information for clinical decisions / treatments of eye and neurological conditions.
  • Participate in research and medical audit projects as and when required.
  • To perform administrative and clerical task as necessary for the efficiency of the service
Please note it is a requirement of The Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust that all successful candidates who require a DBS for the post they have been offered pay for their DBS certificate. The method of payment is a salary deduction from your first month’s pay.
