This role provides paid Healthcare Support Worker experience to support the 500 hours required to meet the Recognised Prior Learning element (RPL) of the self-funded 2 year MSc Nursing Science (pre-registration) programme at Northumbria University.

As a Healthcare Support Worker you will assist the registered nurses (or other healthcare practitioners) in providing high quality patient care, maintaining patients’ privacy and dignity at all times and provide care in a compassionate and sensitive manner. You will work effectively as part of the multi-disciplinary team contributing to the departmental objectives. You will be expected to contribute to housekeeping and other ward / department duties as required, e.g., general tidiness, re-determined stock levels are met and clinical equipment is clean, working and stored correctly and to assist with admin & clerical duties as required.

You will in time develop an awareness of normal parameters concerning patient / client wellbeing and report that which is out with normal parameters to the registered professional. You will plan and prioritise your own and delegated work tasks and activities, carrying out routine elements of assessment to enhance the patient / client journey, following an initial assessment by a registered practitioner and meeting basic care needs of patients e.g., washing, dressing, assistance with feeding etc.

We’re also proud to be the second largest provider of specialised services in the country. This means we support people with a range of rare and complex medical, surgical and neurological conditions, cancers and genetic orders.

Our staff oversee around 1.84 million patients ‘contacts’ each year, delivering high standards of healthcare.

Upon successful completion of the 500 hours by January 2024 you will then start the self-funded full time Nursing Science Registered Nurse MSc programme in your chosen field of Nursing. You can continue to work on the staff bank as a Healthcare Support Worker whilst completing the MSc programme if required.
