Support Worker Role (non-management)

Responsibilities and Outcomes Skills / Experience

Essential:

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assessing resident needs through robust Support Planning and Risk Assessments and obtaining necessary information from other agencies.
  • Ensure that resident support plans and risk assessment are

followed and contribute to regular reviews of these plans, for

individuals to achieve the greatest possible control over their own

life.

  • Assist residents to manage and maximise their finances

effectively and monitor regular rent and service charge payments

where appropriate.

  • Ensuring that all residents’ records are accurately maintained.
  • Promote independent living, confidence building, self-awareness,

training, education, employment opportunities and participation in

the local community.

  • Enable residents to develop and implement their support plan

needs and risk assessments.

  • Communicate/consult with relatives, partners, advocates, friends

or carers and other staff and agencies, as appropriate, regarding

the resident’s health, social care and well-being.

  • Promote resident involvement in shaping and monitoring

services, so they have real choice and control over the service

they receive.

  • Provide high quality, responsive and person-centred services that

meet the physical, mental and emotional needs of residents and

ensuring people have choice and control over their own lives.

  • Be aware of and follow Houses of Hope policies and

procedures, with particular attention to standards of resident

service, health and safety, and equality and diversity

  • Demonstrates a sensitive and supportive

approach to vulnerable people maintaining their

dignity and self-respect at all times.

  • Knowledge of welfare benefits.
  • Good written and oral communication, numeracy,

IT and interpersonal skills.

  • Knowledge of organisations providing services to

vulnerable people.

  • Ability to cope with verbally aggressive and volatile

situations.

Desirable:

  • Understanding of Health and Safety issues.
  • Experience of supported housing work including

housing management, advocacy and debt

management.

  • Be able to cover shifts at short notices and flexible in a demanding working environment

Qualifications

  • Appropriate professional or vocational

qualification – desirable. NVQs 2-3

Key Outcomes:

  • Residents achieve independent living.
  • Activity programmes within the scheme or community where

appropriate.

  • Appropriate support plans are in place and implemented.
  • Residents’ finances are managed with support.

PART B For management roles (_ * Senior Support Worker*_) only

Planning and achieving results

  • Plans on a daily basis and prioritises routine tasks under guidance.
  • Accountable for completing tasks according to standards following policies

procedures and protocols.

Resident Service

  • Thinks of simple ways of dealing with other’s needs.
  • Initiates action to resolve resident problems, responding to the needs and

circumstances of the resident.

  • Follows up to ensure that the service delivered meets the needs of the

resident, keeping promises and commitments.

  • May support external residents with requests for information within

guidelines, routine needs or simple problems.

Problem solving and decision-making

  • Deals with a range of basic problems as they occur, responding to

Immediate operational needs.

  • Takes decisions within the context of a routine job environment.
  • Chooses from appropriate options in response to work issues that arise,

seeking advice and assistance in response to more complex issues.

Knowledge, skills and experience

  • Work involves a variety of tasks that follow established sequences or

procedures.

  • Work requires basic skills acquired through training and work experience to an equivalent of a vocational or academic qualification at level NVQs 2-3.

People Skills

  • Works cooperatively with others, building relationships in own area of work

to deliver priorities.

  • Communicates straightforward information, noting information and

requests accurately, seeking clarification where needed.

  • Uses language others will understand, adapts behaviour and takes

reasonable steps to understand and respond to people with different

backgrounds and needs.

  • May produce and make alterations to standard documentation within an

established framework.

  • Recognises different needs, circumstances and points of view in others, and responds to those appropriately
