Position Overview & Specifications

How you'll make a difference

Vinney Green Secure Children’s Home offers young people a safe, caring environment, where they will experience quality care, education, vocational and life skills training. You will be doing really important work by leading, organising and developing engagement in Food Technology, supporting the overall educational and developmental needs of the young people in the Home.
What will you be doing?
  • lead the Food Technology subject area and be responsible for the learning and development programmes for young people either as a group or individually who may be working towards relevant qualifications such as GCSE.
  • Actively promote the inclusion and acceptance of all young people within the learning environment and will proactively support young people with special educational needs and / or where English as an Additional Language (EAL). Through delivery of appropriate aspects of the Individual Education, Health, Care Plan (EHCP).
  • Lead in assessing, delivering and providing guidance in specified learning, developmental or welfare activities to individuals or groups of young people. This will include the delivery of relevant activities to classes, groups or individuals without a teacher being present. of
  • Understand and respond positively to the physical, emotional and/or behavioural needs of young people and to encourage participation and independence.
  • Provide the Head teacher or Deputy Head Teacher with appropriate feedback and reports on achievement, progress and development, you will be required to contribute to documentation such as behaviour management records and young persons’ daily logs.
Things we need you to know:
  • The salary band is £28,371 - £31,099 per annum, plus Secure Home allowance of £2,583 per annum (pro-rata to hours worked) and enhancements for Sunday and Bank Holiday working.
  • You will be working an average of 37 hours per week.
  • Young people can present physically threatening behaviour and the environment can become tense and anxiety provoking, so for everybody’s safety surveillance cameras are in use in most areas of the building.
  • Vinney Green operates a full non-smoking environment, and there is no provision to facilitate smoking anywhere on site. Staff’s personal belongings are required to be left in a provided locker on entry into the building and we may require you to undertake a further physical fitness check.

What we need from you

  • You should have a good standard of general education, to include literacy and numeracy skills equivalent to GCSE C grade (old) or level 4 (new) in English and Maths
  • You will have a qualification or significant previous experience within Food Technology or Catering and will have excellent subject knowledge
  • You will have a either a qualification in working with children and young people and/or considerable experience of working with young people in a relevant setting
  • You will have good interpersonal skills with both adults and young people. For example the ability to effectively de-escalate conflict between young people, able to communicate concerns with relevant managers.
  • You will have the ability to effectively support young people’s learning.
  • You must be willing to undertake further professional development.
  • You may have a teaching and/or training qualification or Teaching, coaching or training experience with young people aged 11-18
  • It would be beneficial to have previous experience in a specialist setting: SEND in mainstream, special school, special unit etc, particularly with pupils who present with SEMH.
Please note that due to the nature of this role it is a requirement of employment that an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check is obtained for this post.
