Position Overview & Specifications

Department: Forensics Unit
Location: South East Region (can be flexible on base)

We are seeking dynamic and motivate substantive constables to join the new dynamic Digital Investigations and Intelligence team, which will be providing digital advice and tactical support to investigations into serious and organised crime across the South East Region

You will be responsible for identifying digital media opportunities and tactics to tackle and disrupt organised crime. You will be providing digital strategies to SIO and OIC. It is not essential but desirable to have previous experience of working as a DMI or to have knowledge of Digital Forensic, WiFi, Vehicle Telematics. If successful the individual will need to complete a number of technical training courses run by the college of policing.

A keen interest in digital investigation would be a benefit. It is not essential but desirable that a prior knowledge of Digital Forensics, WiFi, Vehicle Telematics, or previous experience as working as a DMI. If successful the individual will need to complete a number of technical training courses run by the College of Policing.

Please note that this role is part of a national, regional and local network and as a result you may be required to travel for business purposes mainly across the south east region and occasionally throughout the UK. Therefore, the successful candidate will require a full UK driving licence.

Due to the nature of our work, security is of paramount importance to us and therefore it will be necessary to pass and maintain vetting level SC. In order to achieve this, you must have resided in the UK for the past five years. Exemptions apply for overseas or other diplomatic service (with HM Government), and studying abroad.

Responsibilities

  • Proactively and reactively support SEROCU investigations identifying digital media opportunities and ensuring that these are exploited to improve the quality of the investigation. Provide tactical advice to enhance investigations.
  • Support the development of a digital strategy in conjunction with SIO/OIC’s to reach objectives for how digital media can support investigations. This will involve supporting SIO/OIC’s with sound judgement and tactical advice to ensure that all investigative opportunities and evidence are identified and captured.
  • Seek specialist support from Digital Forensics, Covert Authority Bureau, SETSU, etc. to apply appropriate expertise to the advancement of an investigation. Build close working relationships develop a comprehensive understanding of the work of these departments.
  • Identify and develop new digital media opportunities and support their implementation across the region enhancing the regions ability to investigate crime and safeguard victims.
  • Provide on scene advice and support in areas such as WiFi, vehicle telematics, cellular and RF knowledge, cloud acquisition, RAM capture and on scene device triage.
  • Work within an ISO 17020 environment to carry out scene assessment and triage, examination of routers to identify hidden devices on a network.
  • Identify opportunities to gather, develop and share digital intelligence, exploiting these opportunities to enhance the regions knowledge and response to offending.
  • Work with external agencies/partners to enhance responses and investigations through exploitation of digital media opportunities.
  • Maintain own professional continuing development including an up to date knowledge of all relevant legislation and policy with emphasis on IPA, RIPA part 1, Chapter 2 and associated Codes of Practice, Data Protection Act and CPIA, attending training seminars both internally and externally, ensuring that all investigations can be conducted in accordance with the current legislation and policy at all times.
  • Support investigations through preparation of relevant disclosure material, in liaison with Crown prosecutors when necessary.
  • Share best practice with the regional forces and nationally to aid collaboration and continuous improvement in policing.
  • Support the training and development of internal and external partners around the use and deployment of digital media investigation strategies.

Essential role based training

  • Digital Media Investigator (if not already completed).
  • Training pathway of relevant courses/conferences such as Open Source, Cyber and WiFi. Some courses require travel and overnight accommodation.
  • Membership to the ICDIP, Chartered Institute.

Required knowledge/skills
Essential

  • Proven investigative policing background and be able to demonstrate building evidential cases to a high standard.
  • Able to demonstrate sound knowledge of CPIA, disclosure and practical application in the criminal justice system.
  • Excellent communication, presentation and influencing skills.
  • Ability to demonstrate creativity and ability to operate under pressure.

Desirable

  • Experience working in the cyber and/or digital environment and knowledge of the practical challenges this presents.
  • Experience and skills in, WiFi training, Vehicle Telematics. Router downloads, Live data capture, Training will be provided.
