Position Overview & Specifications

We provide pathology services not only to the trust but a wide rural GP catchment area and several community hospitals, both NHS and private.

The Biochemistry department processes a high workload (around 3000 requests per day or 6m tests per year) most of which are performed on Beckman AU 5800 and DXI analysers with stand-alone robotics. We moved into a new purpose built laboratory in 2014.

The laboratory is UKAS accredited and we have recently had a full inspection.

We operate a 24/7 service and staff are expected to support the out of hours service under Agenda for Change terms and conditions. There are a minimum of 2 BMS staff working in Biochemistry on every shift.

The Biochemistry Department has a Beckman based Automation section (1 x AU5812, 1 x AU5822, 2 x DXI 800s, Automate 2550 pre-analytical system), Sebia electrophoresis equipment (CZE) and POCT involvement across the Trust.

We are looking for someone who is keen to join the friendly and professional laboratory team as a band 7 BMS. The successful candidate will be expected to have technical knowledge commensurate with this grade but also be able to maintain and progress quality initiatives with a flexible and innovative approach. We are looking for people who work well within a team and have a patient focused attitude.

The Trust supports professional and personal development through experiential learning and both internal and external courses. Learning resources are available on line and via the trust library.

To be responsible for the day to day operation of the designated section of the laboratory, working as part of a team. The post holder will be expected to have or develop knowledge and expertise in specific sections, but may also be required to supervise any of the sections within the discipline, and may be required to deputise for more senior colleagues.

The post holder will be required to participate in the out of hours service ensuring that staff working out of hours are adequately supported in the event of untoward incidents
