Position Overview & Specifications

The primary purpose of the job role is to assist the Responsible Person for Water Safety to ensure that the Trust are compliant with all current legislation relevant to maintaining safe water systems across all hospital buildings.

The role will involve providing assistance with ensuring that all risk assessments are undertaken and kept up to date; auditing contractors working on site to ensure they are completing tasks safely and to a high standard, while following the correct method statements. Ensuring written scheme and PPM tasks are completed to the correct set frequencies.

Understanding the optimum running parameters for water systems across site and instructing contractors to undertake the correct actions when these fall out of normal operating parameters.

Investigating adverse water quality sample results and providing remediation solutions and helping to maintain communication between all relevant hospital departments to ensure work is planned in and completed to the correct timescales.

Undertaking duties in the absence of the Responsible Person for Water Safety and fulfilling their role as an Authorised Person.

The successful applicant will be primarily responsible for assisting the Responsible Person for Water Safety in maintaining high water quality standards within the Trust’s buildings. They will help to manage contractors working on site to ensure all tasks associated with maintaining safe water systems are completed.

Experience of working within buildings with complex water systems is essential, to enable the individual to identify remediation actions required when water quality issues are identified.

The role will involve working Monday to Friday, 37.5 hours a week, with a typical day being 8.00 – 16.30, though the applicant should have a flexible attitude to working, as out of hours may be required.

The main duties and responsibilities include:
  • Investigation of adverse sample results.
  • Auditing the procedures of contractors
  • Manage and prioritise tasks assigned to the water hygiene contractor.
  • Monitor consumption of water
  • Review of legionella risk assessments.
  • Attend Water Safety Group, water projects and operation water meetings and write minutes.
  • Assist with undertaking scalding risk assessments and Pseudomonas aeruginosa risk assessments.
  • Undertake ward and plantroom walks
  • Assist with the inspection of newly installed and modified water systems
  • etc.
Undertake Authorised Person tasks and responsibilities

serving a population of more than 500,000 people, and the main provider of acute and specialist care services for West Berkshire.

We are also the region's specialist centre for cancer, eye and renal care serving over one million people across Berkshire and south Oxfordshire. Our main site is the Royal Berkshire hospital in Reading.

We also provide services at West Berkshire Community hospital near Newbury, the Prince Charles eye unit in Windsor and at our renal unit based between Slough and Windsor. The Trust also provides outpatient services at Townlands hospital in Henley. The Trust also has a cancer and renal centre at the Royal Berkshire Bracknell clinic in Bracknell.

The Trust’s aim is to deliver high quality care by putting patient care first. The Estates team support this by providing an excellent estates maintenance and service operation.
  • Degree in water engineering / biology / microbiology or similar subject; or at least 3 years relevant work experience.
  • Understanding of hot and cold water systems in large complex buildings.
  • Experience of auditing documents and procedures.
  • Ability to summarise data sets into dashboards and reports.
  • Understanding of HTMs, HBNs and other relevant legislation.
  • Understanding of Borehole management.
  • Experience of dealing with Health and Safety issues.
  • The ability to organise and manage a complex workload.
  • The ability to work independently and make decisions, but also be able to work as part of the wider Estates team.
  • The ability to communicate effectively with all healthcare staff across site and maintain good working relationships.
  • The ability to communicate effectively with contractors working onsite.
