Job description: School Counsellor/Therapist

Assistant Principal
Job purpose
To provide a high-quality counselling/therapy service to students experiencing a wide range of social and emotional difficulties. Providing support, guidance and advice to parents, carers and colleagues. Observing confidentiality and supporting the academy’s endeavours to provide excellent teaching and learning for all students. Contributing to the safeguarding and promotion of the welfare and mental health and wellbeing of children and young people.
Main duties and responsibilities

  • To carry out one-to-one therapeutic work with students, covering a variety of emotional and mental health needs
  • To plan, resource and prepare effective and engaging therapy programmes for students
  • To ensure that therapy is facilitated ethically, safely and with consent from all parents/carers/students
  • To continue to obtain key information on students through parent/carer communication, to keep up to date with any changes in the students’ lives and inform the rest of the therapy/teaching team of relevant information
  • To abide by either the BACP or UKCP ethical framework of good practice in Counselling and Psychotherapy
  • To liaise with parents/carers where necessary (respecting appropriate confidentiality) to ensure the student is supported well
  • To liaise with teaching and other pastoral staff where necessary to ensure the student feels supported in school
  • To coordinate, where appropriate, with external parties such as CAMHS, GPs and psychiatrists to ensure the students well-being and safety is protected
  • To carry out brief, anonymised, session notes and keep these stored securely and confidentially
  • Participate in reviews with colleagues to ensure that progress and impact of sessions is documented appropriately.
  • To adhere to the school’s Safeguarding policy recording concerns/actions and consulting with DSL relating to Safeguarding disclosures
  • To have Professional Indemnity Insurance
  • To engage with external clinical supervision, for a minimum of 2 hours per month
  • To provide workshops/presentations to groups of students and staff to promote wellbeing as required
  • Adhere to the academy’s Policies and Procedures
  • Support interventions with parents/carers and students as needed.

These duties and responsibilities should be regarded as neither exhaustive nor exclusive as the post holder may be required to undertake other reasonably determined duties and responsibilities commensurate with the grading of the post.
