Position Overview & Specifications

Our dynamic studio-based Interior Design course addresses the role of the contemporary spatial design practitioner in relation to physical and social contexts and environments. We take a human centred approach which encourages students to consider how design can contribute to positive change towards a fully inclusive society. The course provides students with the tools to develop the creative experimentation, emotional intelligence, and autonomy required of a responsible professional designer.

This post will contribute to the future direction and curriculum of the Interior Design course and will have a role in developing, leading and delivering innovative teaching. The role involves working closely with the Director of Architecture and Interior Design and with the Course Leader, Interior Design, to strengthen the critical approach to spatial and environmental design, and the collaborative links with other disciplines within the University, and with the profession and industry.

We are seeking to appoint an enthusiastic and versatile individual who will work closely with industry partners and bring their expertise and experience to exploring topics of sustainability, conservation and reuse in the course. You will have a sound knowledge of the interior design industry with an understanding of industry practice and RIBA/BIID work packages. We particularly welcome applications from candidates with professional experience and recognised standing in the interior design industry evidenced by a portfolio of projects and/or publications. Expertise in cutting edge experimentation, material research and design innovation, together with the ability to apply these to your design pedagogy is desirable. Applicants should ideally have HE level teaching experience, and relevant industry experience within the UK is preferable.

You will be an advocate for responsible and inclusive practices with an ability to foster a climate of success through critical debate and co-creation of learning. You will be a champion for promoting diversity and equality in interior design, its practices and environments. As an inspiring and innovative designer and a supportive and inclusive teacher you will show an innovative and engaging pedagogical approach in both on-campus and digital teaching sessions. You will be able to demonstrate currency in your professional experience and/or research practice. You will be a strong team player able to demonstrate excellent skills in leadership and in team-working, communication, organisation and management.

The appointment will be made at either Lecturer or Senior Lecturer level dependent on the successful candidate’s experience.
