Fixed Term (1 year) Locum Specialty Doctor in General Surgery

Applicants are invited for the post of Fixed Term (1 year) Locum Specialty Doctor in General Surgery. Candidates with a particular interest in a career path to CESR and beyond will be welcomed. It is expected that the successful applicants will support and contribute to the current redesign process and a flexible attitude to working around sites would be expected.

General Surgery in NHS Lanarkshire is undergoing a period of redesign. The current Phase 2, Business Continuity Arrangement will support the service whilst a medium term solution is sought during Phase 3, through an options appraisal process. This in turn will lead to a potential reconfiguration on completion of the Monklands Replacement Project.

Successful candidates will be offered a base site with the expectation that both unscheduled and planned care may be undertaken on up to any 2 of the NHS Lanarkshire acute sites.

Applicants should hold full GMC registration with a license to practice and have completed at least four years’ full-time postgraduate training (or its equivalent gained on a less than full time or flexible basis) at least two of which will be in a Specialty Training Programme or specialty registrar locum appointment for training (LAT): or shall have equivalent training, experience or competencies, either in the UK or overseas. Potential candidates will be supported with their career development and be pushed towards specialty training or CESR application.

Applications are also welcomed from candidates who, for personal reasons, may be interested in working on a part time basis.

The posts provide excellent opportunity to gain experience in Emergency General Surgery with a separate receiving and theatre “CEPOD” consultant during core working hours, offering unrivalled supervision and training. Elective activities are allocated through a weekly rota and include potential for endoscopy training as well as theatre for core surgical procedures such as hernias and training in minimally invasive surgery. There are numerous opportunities to enhance portfolios through education and training, access to simulation, and the team remains committed to supporting this development with a strong track record of successful CESR application and career progression.

NHS Lanarkshire has excellent post-graduate libraries and IT facilities. Active post-graduate educational programmes are in place, including dedicated protected teaching sessions for junior doctors.
