As a Unit we offer:
- A full preceptorship programme, which will help you to develop clinical skills whilst strengthening theoretical expertise.

- PILS/EPLS
- Assessor/supervisor training
- Caring for children with diabetes or cancer
- Skills training (Venepuncture/cannulation, NGT, central line, tracheostomy, etc)
Ward 4: Paediatric Assessment Unit (PAU)
Ward 4 is open 24 hour/day, has 16 PAU beds. We offer access to expert, evidence based and family centred assessment, treatment, and care.
Paediatric Day Surgery Unit
6 beds area open Mon-Friday, specific for day surgery, including T&O, ENT, etc. Supported by ward 4 senior staff, we provide care from pre-op assessment, supporting families from admission to discharge. We also have a very successful pathway entitled “All about me”, which is an Individualised Elective Admission for Children and Young People with Additional Needs.
Ward 5
Inpatient ward with 22 bed spaces, covering 0-16 years old, offering Medical, Surgical, Oncology and Orthopaedic experience. The Ward has High Dependency beds and offers opportunities for staff to succeed and develop, providing the necessary training courses to care for children on the high dependency pathway.
We also work very closely with NNU, and our CED, opportunities might arise to rotate through all the areas.
We welcome applications from both newly qualified and experienced nurses, registered adult nurses are also welcome, training will be supported by our practice development team.

- To provide the highest standard of evidenced based nursing care for both the children and their families in line with local and nationally agreed standards and guidelines.
- To holistically assess, plan, implement and evaluate the care of patients within their sphere of responsibility.
- In the absence of a senior nurse provide leadership, support and coordination to the ward nurses, following a period of training, and supported practice. Capability having been assessed during a performance review, against the agreed KSF outline and following progression through the second gateway particularly those which support competence in the care of children with respiratory presentations.
- To ensure an ongoing welcoming, caring and safe environment is provided for the children and their families.
- To act as an advocate firstly for the child and then for their family, providing them with information and support and directing them to the relevant support services where appropriate.
- To communicate complex and sensitive information effectively to patients, carers and the multi disciplinary team overcoming any barriers to understanding and providing support during distressing emotional events.
- To start planning the patient’s discharge upon their admission, liaising with the multi disciplinary team, other departments and any community services as necessary.
- To be competent in the administration and checking of prescribed medicines (including controlled drugs) in line with the Trust Policy.
- To participate in the checking and administration of intravenous medications having demonstrated relevant knowledge and competence in accordance with Trust policy.
- To ensure that all equipment is in good working order and have demonstrated relevant knowledge and competence in using equipment.
