Position Overview & Specifications

John Spencer Textiles is a Lancashire-based textile manufacturing company based in Burnley. We are proud that we create and weave our fabrics in our own mill and all our products can genuinely be labelled as “Made in Britain”. Fabrics are woven for a wide range of end-uses: for example industrial, composites and furnishings, including our own Brand/Business, Ian Mankin. The sister-companies both operate from our Head Office and Mill in Burnley, Lancashire.

We have a permanent position available for a Weaver (the role could be full-time or part-time) to join our company. Previous weaving experience is essential for this key role which involves operating rapier weaving looms producing a wide range of fabrics.

Main Responsibilities

  • running a set of looms efficiently
  • repairing broken warp and weft threads in a timely manner
  • keeping the weft creels replenished with yarn
  • monitoring the looms for weaving defects, also checking for evenness of colour and pattern
  • Contact the Supervisor or overlooker in case of queries on procedure or products and to communicate any issues related to defective equipment, yarns and fabrics.
  • Understand the safety requirements and ensure that you work within the Company’s health and safety framework.
  • Work effectively as part of the production team be able to respond to changing requirements and promote a ‘right first time, no fault’ forward approach to quality.
  • Keep the equipment and work areas, within your area of responsibility, both clean and serviceable at all times.
  • Carry out any other duties as required to suit the needs of the business.

This is either a job-share position where you will work on a 2-week shift rotation, working an average of 17.75 hours per week:

Week 1 = Monday to Tuesday 6am - 2pm

Week 2 = Wednesday to Thursday 2pm to 10pm and Friday 12pm to 6pm

You must be willing to work additional hours to provide cover for absence/holidays across all shift patterns & may be asked to work additional hours if the business demand requires.

Alternatively the job could be double-day shifts, alternating earlies/lates: 6am-2pm/2pm-10pm (6am-12pm/12pm-6pm Fridays)

Rate of pay (including shift premium) starts from £13.85 per hour and may increase with experience after a probationary period

About You

You will:

  • Have at least 3 years experience of weaving, preferably on rapier looms weaving a range of yarns
  • Be flexible and reliable
  • Have high attention to detail
  • Be able to follow written instructions accurately
  • Have a quality-focused approach and attitude
  • Ability to work upon your own initiative and effectively as part of a team, with clear communication to both managers and colleagues.
