Position Overview & Specifications

Legal Counsel – PAYMENTS

We are currently seeking a Legal Counsel – PAYMENTS to join the HSBC UK Legal Team.

The role of Legal Counsel is to support the implementation of new regulatory and payment scheme obligations, including SCA, Open Banking, new payment architecture, payment development based on enhancement to existing payment capabilities and leveraging innovation. The successful candidate will be involved with payment transformation activity across the UK and Europe and representing the Legal team on relevant working groups.

The role-holder will work alongside the Senior Legal Counsel to:

  • Identify, manage and advise upon material payments regulatory risks and issues;
  • Carrying out research and analysis of legislative requirements and industry guidance;
  • Provide payments regulatory advice on internal bank projects for the UK and Europe, including supporting business and regulatory transformation and attendance at working groups;
  • Advise on strategic business objectives related to payment services including digital payment innovation, open banking and cross border payments;
  • Be considered to be a trusted adviser to the business by ensuring that commercially sensitive, pragmatic and practical legal support and advice is provided on a cost-effective and timely basis;
  • Provide support and guidance to HBUK & HBEU departments in relation to the legal risks arising from payments regulatory obligations;
  • Be the accountable lawyer or assist the accountable lawyer to provide prompt, commercial, practical and sometimes complex and / or specialist legal advice to HBUK & HBEU business departments;
  • Be proactive in the provision of legal support and in advising the business promptly of material legal developments and their implications.
Requirements

To be successful in this role you should meet the following requirements:

  • Qualified lawyer with experience gained either within a financial institution or top tier private practice;
  • Keen interest in the evolving digital payment landscape and emerging regulatory initiatives, including digital currencies
  • Big picture understanding of the payments regulatory framework;
  • Knowledge and experience of banking, corporate and securities law concepts and a working knowledge of the laws in the major jurisdictions in which HSBC operates;
  • Commercial/project/ regulatory experience an advantage;
  • Ability to prioritise;
  • Good communication and inter-personal skills.

The base location for the role is flexible in the UK but there is an expectation that some time will be spent in the the Birmingham office.
