Position Overview & Specifications

18.5 hours, £33,000 - £35,000 pro rata

An opportunity has arisen for a Hospice Chaplain to join our team at the Hospice of the Good Shepherd. You will be joining us at a pivotal time for developing the next stage of spiritual care as a key member of the multi-disciplinary team dedicated to improving palliative and end of life care for patients and families.

Drawing upon your experience of providing pastoral support, ministry and your skills of working cooperatively and collaboratively, you will have the opportunity to shape the development of spiritual care services at the Hospice.

The successful candidate will have a mature outlook, be personally robust and able to remain resilient when working with sustained distress. Leading a small team of volunteers , you will be able to recognise opportunities for addressing spiritual need and develop and implement new ways of working to respond to this.

You will demonstrate the ability to work efficiently whilst recognizing the need for empathy, sensitivity and confidentiality when working with colleagues and the public.

You will based within the Living Well Service.

The post holder will:

  • Meet and establish relationships with patients and carers providing pastoral, religious and spiritual support including supporting those who are seriously ill, dying and bereaved.
  • Lead a small team of volunteers, work with staff across the Hospice and connect with local faith leaders.
  • Contribute to the induction programme for staff and volunteers.
  • Be involved in the delivery of remembering events and organisational community events which require working with other departments such as Fundraising.


and will be able to:

  • Demonstrate their ability to identify and attend to the spiritual, psychological, and cultural needs of patients, and those important to them
  • Demonstrate evidence of a recognised or accredited status within a Christian denomination, hold a theological qualification and be a registrant or capable of working towards membership of UK Board of Healthcare Chaplaincy
  • Demonstrate an awareness of different faith approaches to death and dying and the needs of individuals to practise their religious rituals and an ability and enthusiasm to work ecumenically and in a multi-faith and belief setting
  • Demonstrate their ability to lead a team of volunteers
