Position Overview & Specifications

About us

Since our foundation in 1976, we have focused exclusively on co-educational Early Childhood Education, the period research has unequivocally established as the most formative in a child’s life and requiring a specialist pedagogical approach.

Thanks to our focus and cumulative experience, and by integrating research findings and best practices from other successful ECE programmes from around the world, we have devised our own, cutting-edge continuous five-year provision to develop our children to their best potential and launch them on a trajectory of happy, healthy and successful lives.

We are the largest stand-alone independent school in the country specialising in 2- to 7-year-olds, which gives us the scale required for employing a critical mass of expert early years educators and having state-of-the-art facilities and resources. However, we are small enough to enjoy a warm and friendly family community atmosphere in which the children benefit from deep relationships with our loving, caring and expert staff.

Everything we do supports the development of the ‘whole child’ as we are very aware that all domains of development evolve in a highly interrelated and mutually supportive fashion.

Therefore, we not only pay great attention to the traditionally emphasised cognitive and physical domains, but also to the social, emotional and self-regulatory (executive function) domains as these skills in particular will help our children to seize the opportunities and surmount the challenges they will face in their futures.

We have a full-time vacancy for a loving, caring, enthusiastic and happy Teaching Assistant with an HLTA or equivalent qualification (applicants must already be qualified as an HLTA and be experienced, preferably also with Special Educational Needs).

The position offers an exciting opportunity for an educator who is passionate about working at the cutting edge of Early Childhood Education and Development in a highly friendly and supportive team environment in which everyone strives for excellence. It has a one-year probationary period, like all of our positions.

We offer a uniquely friendly and supportive environment, a strong established team, well-resourced facilities and competitive salaries. The actual annual salary will range from £20,640 to £23,270 (based on likely September 2023 pay bands, which have not yet been finalised). It is for Term-Time Only (34-35 school/working weeks + 5.6 weeks paid holiday) for our standard full-time hours of 8.30-15.45 Monday-Friday (the comparable annual Full-Time Equivalent salary would be £26,900-£30,330). The 30-minute lunch break and the 15-minute morning break are paid. There is an opportunity for earning additional remuneration through enhanced overtime rates for wrap-around care.

Please visit the "Work with us" page of our website for further details, including the job description and person specification. To apply, please download the application form and, once completed, email it to enquiries@hernehillschool.co.uk.

There is no specific application deadline but early applications are encouraged and will be processed as soon as they are received.

Herne Hill School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and expects all staff to share that commitment. Applicants must undergo child protection screening, including checks with past employers and the Disclosure and Barring Service.

We are looking forward to hearing from you!
