Job description
An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the Ambient Air Monitoring (AAM) team, as part of a highly motivated and efficient operational team.
The successful applicant would play a key role in the operation and maintenance of ambient air monitoring and data collection instrumentation across a national geographical area. They would be working as part of a high performing, close-knit team and would need to be able to thrive in such an environment.
A demonstrably strong technical background with a desire to learn on the job from colleagues is essential. This should be coupled with a positive work ethic, as independent travel throughout the UK is common and some level of autonomy will be expected in time.
Whilst previous experience of operating or maintaining Mcert’s approved air monitoring instrumentation would be an advantage, it is not essential to this role, as training will be provided for any entry level post holders.
National travel is required during most weeks, and commonly involves overnight stays. We have responsibility to respond within 48hrs to instrument breakdown, so some level of flexibility and commitment is required from post holders.
The team
The Ambient Air Monitoring (AAM) Team is a small team that undertakes air monitoring studies, typically looking at the impact of regulated sites on local communities. It deploys its own monitoring equipment to collect data and attempt to determine the sources.

We have also developed our instrument maintenance service; this is extended to compliment other partners in the Environment Agency. We maintain and repair several national monitoring networks across the UK, and support incident response.
Experience/skills required
A generally positive, enthusiastic, and technically minded individual would likely suit this role.
Whilst previous experience of operating or maintaining Mcert’s approved air monitoring instrumentation would be an advantage, it is not essential, as training will be provided for any entry level post holders.
Basic computer literacy and experience with spreadsheets would be helpful, but not vital.
Technical knowledge and experience of data communications would be an advantage to the role.
People who succeed in this post tend to enjoy the detail and technical aspects of equipment maintenance and fault finding. The sort of person that likes to repair things rather than buy a new. As experience/confidence allows, they will, in time, be asked to attend sites and work more autonomously.
The post holder will require a full UK valid driving licence and will be comfortable spending occasional nights away from home and travelling extensively throughout the UK.
