Job description

Climate Change is the biggest risk we face. We are planning for future flood scenarios including a 4oC rise in global temperature and are working with government, local councils, businesses, civil society groups and communities to make our environment a better place for people and wildlife.

Operations teams protect people and the environment by maintaining and operating our flood and coastal risk management assets and responding to incidents.

This hands-on hybrid role involves:

  • Day to day running of the Stores, ordering and control of stock, ensuring compliance of Waste Regulations and management of activities within a Principle Depot

  • Ensuring Depot is managed through ongoing communication with Facilities to realise improvements required.

  • Support the WIP TL in all aspects of the team organisation and planning training activities

  • Maintaining high standards of organisation in the yard and store ( Plant Equipment materials and PPE)

  • Ensuring Environmental compliance through ongoing inspection and audits (SEMA)

  • Driving of Class 1 & 2 HGV vehicles, including response to flood and environmental incidents inside normal working hours, and by participation on routine Stand By rota/Call out for out of hours. Typical work examples – provision of deploying sandbags, delivery and erection of temporary barriers, delivery and assembly of mobile pumps.
The team
Wessex Incident Preparedness Team provide support to 8 Wessex based Field Teams and other EA functions.

Provision of Pumps and Temporary barriers across the country when other areas need assistance during major incidents (initial response).

Based out of Bradney Depot but work can be anywhere across Wessex if required.
Experience/skills required
  • Good understanding of the principles of health, safety and wellbeing to ensure the safety of yourself and others
  • Some experience in asset operation or maintenance/incident response/use of equipment/tools is an advantage.
  • You should have the necessary practical skills and an understanding in environmental awareness as well as a hands on approach.
  • You will be trained and supported to contribute to our response to incidents inside and outside of normal working hours
  • Sound literacy and numeracy skills are required
  • Competent in using IT devices, such as an iPad, and willing to learn our in-house systems
  • Knowledge of the PUWER and LOLER Regulations will be an advantage
  • IT skills will be required, use of Outlook Excel and stock control systems.
  • A Full UK driving license
  • HGV qualified, classes 1 and 2, hiab experience preferable.

The role includes Site and depot working within catchment. The role is based from Bradney Depot, Bawdrip, Somerset, TA78PZ, Somerset. Working hours of 0730 to 1615 M-Th 07:30 to 16:00 Fri. Role is 9 day fortnight with every other Friday off unless there is an operational need to work.

This role includes taking part in a duty roster which attracts additional payments.

Occasional working away and overnight stays away are necessary.
