Position Overview & Specifications

External Communications Adviser

Join EDF as an External Comms Adviser and you will assist with providing high-quality service that enhances the reputation of EDF’s UK fleet of seven Advanced Gas-cooled Reactor stations.

The Opportunity

EDF’s Nuclear Generation business employs around 5,000 people and involves management of a fleet of eight nuclear power stations throughout the UK. Five of those stations are still in the generating phase of their lifetime, supplying zero-carbon electricity amounting to around 15% of the UK’s energy mix. Three of those stations have recently finished generation and are in the first stage of decommissioning.

We are looking for an External Communications Adviser to join the team and be based at Heysham, working on promoting the UK’s existing nuclear fleet to external stakeholders.

Pay, benefits and culture

Alongside a salary starting from £30,000 and a market-leading pension scheme, we offer a range of flexible benefits to support our people across all aspects of their lives.

Your rewards package includes a choice of benefits, such as electric vehicle leasing, enhanced parental leave, health insurance, discounts and employee pricing.

Flexible working means you can work from home (if you wish) and we’ll provide a suite of IT equipment to ensure that you can work remotely comfortably and effectively. The Communications team split their time between working from home and travelling to our sites and offices as required.

Matthew Pardo, External Communications Manager, said: "Working in EDF’s Generation Communications team is extremely rewarding. We cover the nation’s critical infrastructure, at a time when it has never been under as much scrutiny, and deliver a huge range of communications activity and stakeholder engagement to underpin that vital work. There is a wonderful, friendly team with a huge range of communications’ skills to support you and plenty of opportunity to work with colleagues right around the business on everything from Europe’s biggest construction project, to R&D and issues affecting us all as utilities’ customers.”

At EDF, everyone’s welcome. We strive to create an inclusive and diverse environment where everyone has a voice and where you feel confident being yourself. We’re committed to equality, diversity and inclusion. We’d like our future workforce to have an equal gender balance, represent a broad mix of people from minority ethnic backgrounds, LGBTQ+, those with a disability and supporting social mobility.

We’re a disability confident employer and we’ll do all we can to help with your application, making adjustments as you need.

We’ll value the difference you bring and offer opportunities for you to thrive and succeed.

What you’ll be doing

As a core member of the External Communications team, you will create and implement an integrated external communications plan for the Heysham stations, be responsible for the day-to-day management of external communication and host media and other external stakeholder visits.

Working collaboratively with colleagues at the Heysham stations and the wider Generation Communications team, you will identify opportunities for positive media coverage for the sites, manage stakeholder engagement issues and help to build the reputation of EDF’s Generation business.

Who you are

As the External Communications Adviser, you will be taking complex technical topics and presenting them in an accessible way whilst working closely with station directors, management teams and external comms managers. Therefore, we are looking for somebody with excellent verbal and written communication skills, strong interpersonal and stakeholder management skills and somebody who can work within a reactive and ever-changing environment.

You will be required to build and maintain relationships with both internal and external stakeholders and work collaboratively with a variety of colleagues across the Generation business whilst demonstrating experience of management and deployment of effective stakeholder engagement plans.

We are looking for somebody with experience within a media, corporate communications, or journalism focused role and who is delivery focused, with the ability to work at an operational level and sometimes strategic level, where appropriate.

You will have experience of delivering highly effective social and digital media campaigns with demonstrable results, experience of working with confidential and politically sensitive information and a demonstrable track-record of creating, developing, and deploying external communications strategies.

If you’re an excellent problem solver with strong influential skills, then we would love to hear from you!

Closing date for applications: 9th July 2023
