Position Overview & Specifications

At Sizewell B Power Station we’re looking for a Chemistry Technician to join our Technical and Safety Department. As someone with an appreciation of Primary, Secondary and Auxiliary system chemistry, you’ll be working on both laboratory and plant operations. You’ll need a strong understanding of Radiological and Chemical Safety, for example in the laboratory and application of COSHH.

Experience in lab analytical chemistry skills such as ion and gas chromatography would be advantageous, as well as experience in online chemistry feed monitoring. You’ll need an understanding and experience in quality control and assurance practices within a laboratory environment. As a Chemistry Technician you’ll be responsible for the maintenance of laboratory and plant instrumentation as well as investigation of plant issues. You will be supporting site emergency arrangements, outages and dry storage campaigns as well as providing technical advice to support plant operations.

Pay, benefits and culture

We can offer a competitive salary from £30,650 - £46,963 and you’ll be appointed based on the parameters outlined in the Nuclear Generation Company Agreement as well as your existing salary, competence, experience and qualifications. You'll also receive the relevant shift allowance in this role.

What you’ll be doing

On a day-to-day basis you will be responsible for a wide range of activities on the station, which will include:
  • Sampling of plant systems including water, gas, oil and radioactive samples
  • Analysis of samples using wet chemistry techniques
  • Instrumental techniques such as gamma spectroscopy, liquid scintillation counting, UV-VIS spectroscopy, gas chromatography, ion chromatography, atomic absorption and x-ray fluorescence
  • Atmosphere testing and confined space permits
  • Monitoring of chemistry parameters
  • Preparing and reviewing documentation to support the site chemistry programme
  • Testing and monitoring of atmospheres/confined space.

Who you are

Excellent organisational, communication and people management skills as well as a willingness to work flexibly within your own range of competencies is essential to this role, alongside enthusiasm and a determination to succeed. A pro-active approach when dealing with technical issues is required, with a working knowledge of Site Licence requirements and an understanding of permit for work systems and emergency response procedures.

A minimum of a relevant Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF) qualification at Level 2 (GCSE Equivalent) is required and a higher QCF qualification in chemistry or a related science (i.e. HNC, A levels or above) would be advantageous.
