Working at UKCEH is rewarding. Our science makes a real difference, enabling people and the environment to prosper, and enriching society. We are the custodians of a wealth of environmental data, collected by UKCEH and its predecessors over the course of more than 60 years.
As a valued member of our team, you’ll get:
- 27 days annual leave, rising to 29 days after five years
- 10% employer pension contribution
- Enhanced maternity and paternity leave
- 24 hour, 365-day access to support with physical, mental, social, health or financial issues

- And much more.
You’ll be working closely with scientists to plan, deliver and evaluate communications and engagement for major environmental science programmes. These include programmes which benefit the UK research community, governments, businesses and wider society.
For example, you might engage researchers in designing the science infrastructure needed to build national resilience to floods and droughts, or you might engage farmers with information products supporting the transition to sustainable agriculture.
You’ll be joining a leading independent, not-for-profit research institute that’s committed to recruiting talented people like you, progressing your career and giving you the support you need to thrive at UKCEH.
Your main responsibilities will include:
- Lead on communications and stakeholder engagement for major environmental science programmes, including National Capability programmes.
- Create, deliver and evaluate communications and stakeholder engagement plans for major science programmes, ensuring these plans support the delivery of programme objectives.
- Map stakeholders and coordinate stakeholder engagement in major programmes in a way that is both pragmatic and effective.
- Create content to engage diverse audiences, including researchers, government departments, public bodies and business sectors, and share this via a range of channels.
- Identify suitable events at which to engage stakeholders with major science programmes, and work with the events coordinator and science teams to plan our presence at these events.
- Work with the internal communications manager to ensure that UKCEH staff are appropriately informed about and engaged with major science programmes.
- Work with the Research Impact Manager and Research Development Manager to optimise impact and ensure communications and engagement support impact plans.
- Report on communications and engagement to programme funders and evaluate activities, ensuring they support both programme and organisational objectives.
For the role of Communications and Engagement Manager, we’re looking for somebody who has:
- A degree in a relevant subject such as marketing, communications, or environmental science
- Certification from a professional marketing or public relations body
- Demonstrable experience of creating, delivering and evaluating communications and stakeholder engagement plans, ideally in a science or research environment.
- A passion to engage diverse audiences with environmental science and to increase the impact of that science.
- Able to map stakeholders and coordinate engagement in a way that is practical, effective and aligns with programme objectives.
- Able to produce creative and engaging content with support from in-house design staff and external agencies as appropriate.
- Confident working in digital media, including using website content management systems, creating multimedia content, and managing social media accounts.
- Good at building relationships externally and internally with people operating at different levels in diverse roles.
- Excellent planning and organisational skills, and able to deliver to a budget and deadlines.
