Applications from suitably qualified and motivated individuals are invited for the position of Research Assistant/Research Fellow in rejuvenation of fatigued metallic materials. The successful candidate will be a member of the CircularMetal research team as part of the National Circular Economy Research Hub funded by the UKRI’s NICER programme.

BCAST is a speciality research centre focusing on solidification and wider metallurgical research with an international reputation and is the host of the national centre of excellence in liquid metal engineering – The Future Liquid Metal Engineering Hub (Future LiME Hub), and the host for the CircularMetal Research Centre as part of the National Circular Economy Research Hub. This post aims to develop practical techniques for routine rejuvenation of fatigued metallic materials, which are analogous to “food, drink and sleep” for human beings as routine recovery approaches. The post holder will establish a comprehensive fundamental understanding of the mechanism of metal recovery during routine rejuvenation, and develop innovative techniques that can rejuvenate fatigued components. The post holder is also expected to work closely with other members of the MHS (metal health service) team and contribute positively to the overall success of the CircularMetal programme.

The successful candidate should have a minimum qualification of PhD degree (or working towards) in materials science, metallurgy and engineering, physics or another suitable engineering discipline, and should have a sound background in physical metallurgy. Research experience in fatigue of metallic materials, skills in microstructural characterisation using advanced electron microscopy techniques and a working knowledge of various mechanical testing techniques are essential. In addition, he/she should have good communication and presentation skills and be a team player.

Informal enquiries should be directed to Prof. Z. Fan (zhongyun.fan@brunel.ac.uk)
