Position Overview & Specifications

Purpose:

NERC/BAS has taken delivery of its new polar research vessel, the RRS Sir David Attenborough. This was part of a £300M programme of works, which also included a number of land-based infrastructure projects, such as wharf upgrades, station buildings and services improvements at the research stations, invested in improving our Antarctic infrastructure. These projects are known collectively as the Antarctic Infrastructure Modernisation Programme (AIMP). The next phase of this programme, with significant spend (c. a further £300M) over the next ten years, is now underway. The programme includes air capability and infrastructure improvements, the decarbonisation of the UK’s main research station at Rothera and delivery of a new zero emissions station at Signy. All projects have very significant environmental, renewable energy and sustainability drivers.

NERC/BAS has entered into long-term partnering contracts with a Technical Advisor and a Construction Partner in order to deliver this challenging programme.

  • Assist in the coordination of the BREEAM & CEEQUAL project assessment for all AIMP projects.

  • Support the communication of the sustainability work of the AIMP to the wider community.
