Blackburn Museum and Art Gallery opened in 1874 and houses a rich and fascinating collection covering, fine art, decorative art, Egyptology, coins, manuscripts, natural history, social history and South Asia. Recently awarded Arts Council England National Portfolio status as well as capital works through MEND funding and heading towards our 150th year in 2024, it is an exciting time to join the team to look forward to and shape the next period in our development.
The role of Collections Engagement Assistant combines work with collections, both in documenting, building knowledge and their care, alongside exploring innovative ways to engage the public with the collections, building new audiences as well as developing new audiences through social media and digital platforms. The Collections Engagement Assistant will be responsible for developing and working with volunteers in collection management and be part of the Chip In volunteering programme across the cultural partners in Blackburn with Darwen Borough.
As a small museum team, the post will be an integral part of Blackburn Museum and Art Gallery, working with the collections team as well as engagement and front of house, to collectively ensure that we foster and develop strong relationships within the community and develop an inclusive narrative for the museum as we move into the next 150 years.
The Collections Engagement Assistant will be based at Blackburn Museum and Art Gallery and will primarily work there but there will also be opportunities to work across the wider museum service including Turton Tower.
