Birmingham City University is a leading modern university, in one of the UK’s largest thriving cities. The Faculty of Health, Education and Life Sciences has an outstanding reputation for the training of health and education professionals, assisted by first rate facilities and placement opportunities. We are looking to recruit a skilled life sciences technician to help deliver technical to support existing life science courses and laboratories within the Faculty.

You will join a team of friendly life sciences technicians and provide proactive support for life sciences teaching and research laboratories. The team has a range of duties including but not limited to preparation, set up and clearing of laboratories for practical teaching sessions, supporting research laboratories and outreach activities.

You will be able to carry out aseptic work quickly and efficiently, prepare solutions and reagents, preparing laboratory equipment for use while working strictly to local procedures. Also essential to the role are asset maintenance, maintaining health and safety arrangements, purchasing of consumables, maintaining chemical and biological records, optimising experimental set ups, laboratory cleaning, waste management and other tasks as required. Expertise in cell biology or microbiology would be useful.

You should have a good standard of education including HND or BSc in a life sciences subject, together with practical experience working as a life sciences technician or a similar technical role in higher education or industry. Strong communication skills and the ability to troubleshoot and optimise experiments, working closely with academic colleagues, are essential. Experience of applying health and safety within the laboratory environment is also important.
